Mac Os For G4 Imac

It is designed to run specific applications native to an Apple PowerMac running Mac OS X. Many other models of Macs cannot run PPC software, but PowerPC Macs are able to do so. The PowerPC processor can run up to 733 MHz. What are some features of the PowerPC G4? This Mac model was touted by Apple as a personal supercomputer when it debuted in. The iMac G4 originally included both Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X, due to the machine being released the year Mac OS 9 was discontinued. When running newer versions of Mac OS X (Tiger and Leopard), the iMac G4's GeForce4 MX GPU was not capable of Core Image rendering. Then I tried downloading a Mac OS X 10.0 and 10.4 install disk DMG's, burning them on CD's, DVD's and even a USB stick (from Disk Utility in a MacBook Pro), booting the G4 while pressing Option but it only appears the main HHD. The iMac G4/700 (Flat Panel), G4/800 (Flat Panel), and G4/800 17-Inch (Flat Panel) are capable of booting in MacOS 9. Subsequent models are only capable of booting a version of MacOS X and running MacOS 9 applications in the 'Classic' Environment provided by MacOS X 10.4.11 'Tiger' and lower ('Classic' is not supported starting with MacOS X 10.

This is a copy of Mac OS 9.2.2 for the PowerMac G4 MDD. The linked file is an OS X disk image named 'OS9General.dmg' which was contained on the Software Restore CDs bundled with these systems. It includes 'Applications (Mac OS 9)' and 'System Folder'. Unlike retail Mac OS 9 installers, this software is able to boot the PowerMac G4 MDD (FireWire 400 models) into OS 9 or can be used as Classic Mode on any PowerMac running Mac OS X v10.1-10.4. This System includes the Mac OS ROM file v9.6.1.

To use this software to boot an MDD in OS 9, use Disk Utility in Mac OS X (10.1-10.4) to format a hard drive in 'Mac OS Extended' format, and be sure to choose the option to include Mac OS 9 Drivers. Once formatted mount the .dmg file and copy the System and Applications folders from the disk image to the hard drive. Restart your MDD via the Startup System Pref Pane or with the Option key held down, and select your Mac OS 9 drive as the Startup Disk.

PPC Macs cannot boot OSX from USB drives, only FireWire drives.
You may be able to Install OSX to the Drive then Move it internally, but why not swap them now, install to the new internal drive, then import/migrate/recover what you need off the old internal now in the USB case?
Maybe before that, have you tried booting from the Install CD/DVD then after you choose your language, a Menubar will show up top, find Disk Utility and run it from there.
